Poon Hill 에서 Gandrung으로 - 08-2-17

푼힐(3,210m)에서 기대했던 일출 광경을 보지 못한 우리는 롯지로 돌아와 아침식사를 하고 예정보다 늦은 9시 30분에 산장을 떠나 지루하고 기나긴 트레킹이 시작했다. 산장의 뒷 마당을 통해서 산길로 접어들었다. 오르막 길로 접어들면서 어제 무리했던지 허리와 다리에 통증이 온다. 걱정이다. 한시간쯤 올랐을 때 다시 푼힐 보다 낮은 산(3,180미터) 정상에 이르니 하늘이 개이는 것 같았다. 푼힐에서 볼 수 없었던 설산이 보인다. 고개를 높이 들어야 볼 수 있을 정도로 산은 하늘 높이 걸려있었다.
We returned to our lodge with a disappointment for not being able to see the white peaks. After breakfast at the lodge we packed our stuff and left the lodge at 9:45AM for a day long trekking of the day. When we reached another 3,180 meter high peak we could see the peaks between the clouds.

산정상에서 안나푸르나 연봉 감상도 잠시 우리는 다시 하산길을 재촉했다. 오늘 내려가는 길이 만만치 않아 시간이 많이 걸리기 때문이다. 산의 북사면에 길이 나있어 몹시 미끄러워 아이젠을 착용해야 했다. 아이젠을 착용했어도 두번이나 미끄러졌다.
데우랄리에 11시40분 도착 산행을 계속 1시 45분에 반단티(3,180m)에 도착 점심식사를 했다. 반단티까지는 오늘 여정의 4분의1 밖에 안되는 거리이지만 벌써 4시간이나 결렸다. 그만큼 길이 미끄러웠다. 오을 내려오는 길은 우연히도 원불교회에서 교목이신 두여성 트레커를 만나 한참동안 같이 내려왔다. 종교에 오래 몸을 담았던 탓인가? 얼굴에서 울러나오는 표정이 한없이 평화로워 보였다. 푼힐을 하고 안나푸르나 베이스 캠프까지 트레킹할 계획이라고 했다. 대단하다는 생각 밖에는...
Our guide said that todays course is very likely icy and we shall need to put on spikes. The north faced trail was really icy and slippery. When we reached Deuralli(3,180m) at 11:40AM. It took us two hours in such a short distance. We took a break at Deuralli for about twenty minutes. There is nothing like a hot coffee after a hard walking.

갈길은 멀다, 아직도 오늘 행정의 4분의1도 못 왔으니... 타데파니(2,630m) 마을에서 안내도 앞에서 동반자 이상일 사장과.
We have a long way to go yet. We've come only a quarter of today's course.

간드룽(1,940m)의 '안나푸르나 롯지'에 도착한 시각은 저녁 6시 25분. 새벽에 푼힐 전망대를 오르내린 두시간 합해서 13시간 정도를 산행한 셈.
We arrived at Annapurna Lodge in Gandrung at 6:25 in the evening. When we add two hours of walking back and forth between the lodge and the Poon Hill, we walked for 13 hours today.

Poon Hill 의 해돋이 -08 -2-17

고레파니(2,860m)의 마운틴-뷰 롯지에서는 샤워시설이 말썽을 피운다. 주인장에게 당장 고쳐달라고 재촉했지만 한시간 넘게 소식이 없다. 식당에 내려가 어찌되었는지 물으니 깜빡했던 모양이다. 이상일 사장이 갖고 온 소주로 목적지에 도착한 것을 자축하였지만 혹시나 내일 아침에 두통을 유발할까봐 소주 두잔으로 만족해야했다. 새벽 5시반에 롯지를 출발 일출을 보기 위해 푼힐을 향해 올라갔다.
After we checked in the lodge Stan Lee, my companion and me celebrateed our success of the first day trekking in Himalaya with soju (as you know it is world famous Korean liquor). The Mountain view lodge had a poor facility due to lack of electric power. Later on I realized that I'd better not expect such comfort or convinience from lodge in this area. We woke up ealrly in the morning and left the lodge for Poon Hill at 5:40am to see Sun rising.

우리가 전망대에서 볼 수 있는 것은 다만 구름낀 하늘 분이였다. 순간적으로 지나가는 구름사이로 '안나푸르나 남봉'이 살짝 보이고는 이내 얼굴을 감춘다. 아래 보이는 산이 '히운출리'라고 설명해준다. '안나푸르나 남봉'은 좀처럼 모습을 보여주지 안는다. 마치 하늘거리는 얇은 속치마로 가려진 여인의 속살 같이 보일락 말락 하는 것은 푼힐까지 올라운 트레커들을 안타깝게 했다.
When we reached the Poon Hill to apppreciate the Annapurna range, the sky was cloudy and the Annapurna South and other peaks were hidden behind the clouds. The peak in the picture below is Hiunchulli.

Hille 에서 Ghorepani 까지 - 08-2-16

'맘타 '또는 '마마타 롯지'에서 이번 트레킹의 산행 첫날 밤을 슬리핑 백속에서 떨며 지새다 새벽 4시반에 그만 털고 일어났다. 칫솔질과 아침식사 대충하고는 배낭을 메고 포터를 앞세워 산행을 시작했다. 만리장성을 쌓은 중국 사람들이 대단하다면 나는 해발 2천 미터가 넘는 히말라야 트레킹 비탈길을 모두 돌로 계단을 쌓아 만든 네팔인들이 더 훌륭하다고 생각하게 된다. 더더구나 도저히 상상이 안갈 정도로 어려운 산비탈에 계단식 경작지를 만들어 농사를 지어 식량을 자급하는 노력이 경이로웠다. 사진을 수 없이 많이 찍었으나 카메라에 저장이 되지 않았다. 왜그랬을까? 캐넌 Camera 대리점에 가서 클레임을 할 작정이다.
It was so cold that we couldn't have a sound sleep even in a goose-down sleeping bag.  The plywoods-made-room was not well built to block cold air from out side. We departed the lodge early in the morning. All the trails made by the dwellers in the mountains were made with rocks and flat stones connecting the small villages scattered here and there in the mountains. As the villages are located in the slopes, people had to develop farms near their homes. The solid farming developed on the slopes are amazing and wonder how they made this.
아래 놓여있는 배낭은 우리가 메고 다니는 것들. 그러나 제일 큰 것은 무게가 30kg 이상 나가지만 체격이 그리크지 않은 우리 포터 '니마'는 그 큰 짐을 이마로 메고 잘도 올라 간다.
The bags in the below photo are the ones we are carrying. Our porter was not a big guy but he carries a huge cargo bag weighing over 30 kilograms and walk up faster than me.

이런 현수교는 건널때면 죄우로 흔들리는게 중심 잡기가 힘들어 요령이 필요하다.
There were not a few such suspension bridge like seen below that sways while walking on the bridge to cross a river.

짐 싣고 높은 산을 넘나드는 말들의 행렬. 이 말들은 상인들이 산속에서 사는 사람들에게 판매하기 위한 생활필수품을 실어 나른다.
A herd of horses are carrying stuffs that people need for everyday life.

산중턱 1,960 미터 고도의 우렐리(1,960m)에서 점심식사를 휴식을 하면서 기다린다. 이들의 점심 식사준비는 대략 40 분이상 걸리는 것 같다. 별로 바빠 보이지도 안는데.
Take a rest at Ureli for lunch after four hours of trekking. When we order for a meal it takes normally at least 40 minutes to be served.

히말라야에 온다는 마음에 나는 언제나 하얀눈에 덮여있는 길을 머리속에 그리고 있었다. 그러나 막상 이곳에 왔을 때는 상황은 많이 달랐다. 위도가 위도인 만큼 비록 해발 2,500 미터일지라도 눈은 없고 대신 이런 정글을 지날때가 많았다.
Before I get to Himalaya i concieved that I will trek on snow covered trails in the mountains. But it was wrong. There are many parts that I have to pass such dark jungle pathes like below.

드디어 오후 4시35분에 고레파니(2,860m) 도착! 11시간을 걸었으니!  분명 내 능력을 초월한 이변이다.
아래 작은 탐은 고레파니 중심거리에 있는 신사 같은 것.
At 4:35pm we arrived at Gorepani (2,860m). I walked for 11 hours today. It was srprised.
I was wondering if I really could walk in the mountains for such long time. But I made it.
The white monument (below) is a kind of shrine of buddists.

Nayapol 에서 트레킹 시작 -08 - 2-15

우리가 탄 비행기가 히말랴야 산맥 근처를 날자 기체가 몹시 흔들렸다. 흔들리는 비행기가 불안 했던지 내옆 좌석의 이상일 사장이 좌석 팔걸이를 잡는 게 힘이 잔득 들어간 것이 겁이난 것 같은. 40분 남짓 날은 비행기는 산듯하게 포카라 공항에 안착한다. 짐을 기다리는 동안 같은 비행기에 탓던 아줌마들에게 말을 걸으니 카나다 몬트릴에서 왔단다. 간드룩 가지 3박 4일로 가볍게 갔다 올 예정이라고 한다. 말대로 가볍게 갔다 올 수 있을지?

When we were flying by the Himalayas, the small airplane was shaking a little bit. Stan seemed a little scared. He was grapping the armrest with all his (?) might. The airplane had 30 passenger seats. While we were waiting for our bagages at the Pokhara airport we happened to talk with ladies about our planned courses. They introduced themselves they are Canadians and one of them was visiting her sister who is staying in Kathmandu, Nepal. We took a snap shot with a hope of success in trekking of both of us.

한 40분쯤 가다 점심식사를 하기로 했다. 우리가 잠시 머문 식당 옆으로 십여필의 조랑말들이 힘겹게 무거운 짐을 싣고 산길을 걸어가고 있는 광경을 처음 목격했다. 이런 광경은 고레파니 가는 동안 자주 눈에 띄였다.
When we were waiting for lunch to be served, we happened to see a herd of ponys with heavy looking cargos on their backs. We often saw such herd of horses on the way to Gorepani. Our guide said some of them carries cargoes as far as Jonsom tens of kilo-meters in 2,000 meters high mountians.

왜 이런 험한 산골에서 사는지 알수 없는 일. 그러나 그들의 얼굴 표정은 행복하기만 하다.
It is hard to understand why theses people are dwelling in this mountainous area. As if they are puzzling me with such questions, they look so happy .

첫날의 트레킹은 그리 먼길은 아니였지만. 그래도 긴장된다.
I was a little excited and thrilled with this first trekking in Himalayas and also nervous though I have prepared for this during the last two years.

네시간 산행후에 우리는 드디어 첫 숙소인 산장에 도착해서 짐을 풀었다.
After four hours walking we reached at a lodge where we will stay for the night.

Story on Himalaya Trekking 히말라야 트레킹 이야기-08-2-14

단 두사람으로 구성된 우리일행 이 상일 사장과 나는 2월 14일 인천공항을 떠나 네팔의 수도 카트만두로 향한다. 우리나라와 네팔은 시차가 3시간 15분이라고 한다. 참 묘한 시간차다.
7시간 정도 날아 비행기는 카트만두 공항에 도착했다. 공항이 아주 작다. 1인당 국민소득이 US$143 이 말해주듯이 가난이 줄줄 흐르는 것 같아 보였다. 네팔의 인구는 작년 기준으로 2,890만명이고 카트만두는 200만정도라고 한다. 평균 연령이 남자 20.5 세이고 여자가 20.6 세라고 하니 어지간히도 유아 사망율이 높은가 보다. 주요 민족으로 네팔인 80%, 테벳인 20%. 여기서 네팔에 대한 설명은 생략한다. 인터넷에 들어가면 정보들이 넘쳐흐를 테니까.
Stan Lee and I took a flight via KE 695 departing Incheon Int'l Airport at 9:40 AM for Kathmandu, Nepal on February 14th. We arrived at Kathmandu at 2:08 PM local time. The life of Nepali in Kathmandu seemed like those of Koreans' in 1950's. However, the roads were full with overflowing cars and motorcycles and traffic in the city was unbelievably terrible.

도착하던 날 카트만두 시내를 가볍게 돌아 보았다. 인구 200백만이라고 하지만 카트만두가 분지에 위치해서 그런지 아니면 차가 너무 많은 탓에 매연 때문인지 세계의 지붕 히말라야를 뽑내는 네팔 수도의 인상은 공해 그 자체였다. 매연 때문에 숨을 쉬기 거북하다. 우리는 일직 저녁식사를 마치고 잠자리에 들기로 했다. 다음날 아침 일찍 일어나 짐을 챙겨 공항으로 가야 한다. 내륙 중심에 있는 제2의 도시 포카라로 이동하기 위해서이다.

히말라야 트레킹 코스와 일정

2월14일 출발하여 네팔 히말라야 산속에서 4박 5일간 하루 열시간이 넘는 힘든 트레킹을 마치고 오늘 2월 22일 새벽에 집에 돌아왔습니다. 이번 트레킹을 같이 할 동반자를 지난 몇달동안 찾다가 현대자동차 해외판매부에서 나와 같이 일했던 이상일씨와 의기투합하여 고난의 길을 같이 걷기로 하고 떠났었습니다.

우선 8박 9일의 일정과 코스만을 아래와 깉이 간략하게 남깁니다..................................

2/14(목)  : KE696편으로 출국. 현지 카트만두 공항에 14:08 도착. 카트만두의 시내의 타멜
               시장을 둘러보고 호텔 SOALTEE Crowne Plaza Hotel 체킨

2/15(금)  : 07:30 호텔에서 공항으로 출발,
               08:00 출발예정은 10:00로 지연되어 출발. 포카라에 10:40 도착
               택시로 나야풀까지 12:25 도착, 포터와 합류 12:47 산행시작. 도중에 중식후
               다시 산행, 16:45에 Hille도착하여 Lodge에 짐 풀다. 총 4시간 트레킹

2/16(토)  : 07:40 에 롯지를 출발. Uleri지나 Banthanti 에서 중식후 Gorepani까지 계속산행,
               Mountain View Lodge에 4:35 도착 ,총 9시간 산행

2/17(일)  : 새벽에 기상, 05:30 에 Poon Hill(3,210m) 전망대로 출발. 06:50에 도착했을 때
               안나프르나 산군의 장관을 바라본다는 기대는 전망대에 올랐을 때 구름 때문에
               실방. 전망대를 출발, 롯지에 도착 아침식사 9시35분 출발.
               Uleri에 11:40 도착, Banthanti에 13:25 도착 중식. Baisi Karka에 16:20 에 10분 휴
               식, 계속 하산 오늘의 목적지 Ghandrung에 저녁 18:25 도착. 총13시간 산행

2/18(월)  : Ghandrung 의 롯지 Annapurna Lodge에서 07:30 출발. 안나푸르나에서 흘러
               내리는 강 ㅡModi Kohla (모디 강)을 건너는 다리에 09:30 도착. 두시간 동안 급경
              사진 돌계단을 내려옴. 현수교를 건너 Landrung 마을까지 급경사 돌계단을 한시
              간 올라감. Tolka 12:40 에 통과, Deuralli 에 16:10 도착. 오늘의 목적지 Damphus
               에 저녁 6시 15분 도착. Panorama Lodge에서 짐을 내림. 총 11시간 산행.

2/19(월)  : 06:00 기상, 안나푸르나 연봉의 일출 광경을 보기위해 언덕위에 올라 갔으나 역시
              구름때문에 설산구경은 수포로 돌아감.  아침 식사후 하산을 위한 산행시작. 급경
              사진  내리막 돌계단 길을 두시간에 걸쳐 내려와 택시를 타고 Pokhara에 돌아 옴.
               Pokhara에 Fulbari Hotel에 체킨하고 휴식. 모처럼 호텔에서 편안한 잠을 잠.

2/20(화)  : Pokhara관광, Kathmandu로 이동, SOALTEE Crowne Plaza Hotel 로

2/21(수)  : 카트만두 시내 관광, 화장터 및 사원. 귀국

2/22(목)  : 0:25 인천 공항 도착.

인사가 만사라는데...

미국 언론에 기아자동차 현지법인의 수장들에 대한 인사에 대하여 힐란한 기사가 게재되었다. 인사가 만사라는데 과거나 지금이나 그렇지 못한 경우가 없지 않은가 보다. 
기아자동차 본사에서는 나름대로 이유가 있다고 하겠지만 현지 언론과 자동차 딜러들이 그렇게 보지 안는데 문제가 있다. 이미지 개선은 제품 개선만 가지고 되는 것이 아니다.  작금 일어나고 있는 이런 현상이 모두 기업 이미지에 부정적으로 작용하게 될 것이기 땐문이다.

Len Hunt, Ian Beavis leave Kia

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barely two months after being promoted to CEO of Kia Motors America, Len Hunt has resigned, company officials told dealers at the Kia make meeting today. Hunt joined the company in October 2005 as COO.

Officials also confirmed to dealers that Ian Beavis, vice president of marketing, also has left the company. In an email to Automotive News Saturday, Beavis said he could not comment. Hunt did not return phone calls.

 

It is not immediately known why Hunt and Beavis left their positions. On Feb. 5, Kia announced that Byung Mo Ahn had been named to the newly created position of chairman and group CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, the automotive plant currently under construction in West Point, Ga. Ahn most recently held the position of CEO of Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia.

"Ahn was appointed to this position due to the importance of the United States market to the automotive industry and in terms of Kia's global operations. He will be based at KMA's corporate campus in Irvine, Calif.," Kia said in a prepared statement.

 

The statement further said that "Ahn brings to the organization more than 30 years experience with the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group. Ahn has held various positions within Kia Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co., including president and CEO of Kia Motors America from 1999 through 2001 when he guided the company through unprecedented growth and record sales of more than 40 percent during his tenure."

 

Hunt replaced Peter Butterfield, who was fired as CEO of Kia Motors America at a dealer meeting in October 2005. Butterfield was hired by Ahn.

Kia's sales had risen under Hunt, and that's why he was promoted to CEO, the company wrote in a release on Nov. 12, 2007.

"This decision reflects a solid vote of confidence in the leadership of Len Hunt," E.S. Chung, president and CEO of Kia Motors Corp. wrote in the statement. "He has put together and empowered a team of seasoned professionals to help Kia flexibly meet the changing U.S. market situation, and he is the right choice to lead the company going forward."

 

Kia's sales were down 5.2 percent to 21,355 units in January 2008 compared to January 2007. All car nameplates were up except the full-sized Amanti sedan. Truck sales were down 30.7 percent. Kia will begin selling the Borrego, its first midsized V8 powered SUV in the United States in late spring or early summer as a 2009 model.

 

Hunt, 51, had been executive vice president of VW of America Inc. before joining Kia as COO. Before that, he was vice president of Audi of America Inc. Hunt joined Kia because he did not want to accept a VW position that would have required him to go to Europe to oversee worldwide marketing for Bentley.

 

Beavis, 54, joined Kia in May, 2005 after leaving Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. in Nov. 2004 as vice president of marketing. Beavis also worked in marketing at Ford of Australia and Lincoln-Mercury Division in the United States. He worked on the Toyota account at Saatchi & Saatchi and headed the San Francisco and Seattle offices for Foote, Cone & Belding on the DaimlerChrysler account.

 

The Koreans have been at odds with their American executives in this country.

In addition to Butterfield being fired in 2005, Bob Cosmai the CEO of Hyundai Motor America was fired in January, 2006. He was replaced by Steve Wilhite, who was hired as the COO in August, 2006. Wilhite left the company in September, 2007.

There was tension in the room. Kia dealers went to their make meeting yesterday wanting to know whether rumors were true that Len Hunt, CEO of Kia Motors America, and Ian Beavis, vice president of sales, had left the company.

They soon got confirmation that Hunt - named CEO a mere two months earlier - and Beavis had resigned.

 

The rumors had been flying here since Friday. And when Hunt and Beavis were no-shows at the Kia reception Saturday, confusion swirled. Although many believed the rumors to be true, most employees and dealers at the party said they had received no formal word.

 

Tom Loveless, Kia's vice president of sales, chaired the make meeting. After about 30 minutes with no mention of either Hunt or Beavis, Tacoma, Wash., dealer Ken Phillips stood up and asked about Hunt.

"They said he (Hunt) resigned this morning and so did Ian Beavis," Phillips told Automotive News after the meeting.

 

It then became clear that Ahn Byung Mo, who on Feb. 5 had been named to the newly created position of chairman and group CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, would take over Hunt's duties.

Ahn already is CEO of Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia. He also served as CEO of Kia Motors America from 1999 through 2001.

 

Don Hicks, owner of Shortline Kia in Aurora, Colo., says the dealers were concerned. "This is not the first time this has happened," he says.

Peter Butterfield, Hunt's predecessor, was fired as CEO at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas in 2005.
